After years of planning, construction is finally underway on Sea Isle City’s new kayak launch site, which takes advantage of a picturesque bayfront location. The project will also feature a fishing pier.
“We expect the new fishing pier-kayak launch project to be completed in the fall 2020,” said Sea Isle’s Public Information Officer Katherine Custer.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a federal permit for the project earlier this year. That paved the way for the city to move ahead with plans for construction near 60th Street at the Dealy Field recreation complex.
The city received a $935,605 grant from Cape May County’s Open Space Board to help pay for the fishing pier and kayak launch site project. EZ Docks South of Ocean View submitted the lowest bid of $975,550 for the construction contract.
Custer noted that the project took a long time to get to the construction phase, but when it is completed, it will be a gem for residents and visitors to enjoy.
“This project is nearly four years in the making, and many people are looking forward to seeing it come to fruition,” she said. “When completed, this newest of Sea Isle City’s recreation facilities will give everyone much needed access to the bay.”
Amenities will include a fishing pier and a handicap-accessible launch facility for kayaks and paddleboards. The Boardwalk-style structure will extend 132 feet out into the bay. And there is parking nearby.
The project will also include decorative lighting and a “passive pier” consisting of a covered pavilion. City officials have said that the passive pier will offer a quiet escape for nature lovers.
Custer offered all the reasons that the project will enhance the city’s bayfront.
“The covered pavilion will be a great place to bird watch and enjoy sunsets, the fishing pier will give anglers more opportunity to catch dinner, and we are certain the kayak launch will get a lot of use as well,” she said. “It’s going to be wonderful.”
A communitywide survey conducted in 2015 included responses from local residents urging the city to create more access to the bayfront as a way to enhance recreation, including kayaking.
