Veterans gather for a group photo at the Veterans Park monument during Sea Isle City's Veterans Day ceremony in 2023. Now, the women who have served the country in the military will also be recognized.
The public is invited to Sea Isle City’s first ever Women Veterans Recognition Day ceremony.
The ceremony will take place 10 a.m. Thursday, June 12, at Veterans Park at JFK Boulevard and Landis Avenue.
The community will recognize, honor and remember the signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act in 1948 by President Harry Truman, which allowed women the right to serve as permanent members in the U.S. armed forces.
Hosted by Mayor Leonard Desiderio, the ceremony will feature guest speakers, including two women veterans from Cape May County, as well as Cape May County Clerk Rita Rothberg, who will explain how women from Cape May County have been defending the nation’s independence for generations.
Additionally, a ceremonial wreath will be placed at the base of Veterans Park’s Memorial Fountain, patriotic hymns will be sung, and prayers will be offered for the nation’s female veterans.
Although, there are nearly two million U.S. women veterans, this date is not yet recognized nationally. However, New Jersey is among the states that do commemorate Women Veterans Recognition Day – and Sea Isle City will proudly honor women veterans during the ceremony.
