How Joey Miller, New Braunfels, Texas, Investment Advisor Balances Fatherhood, Hard Work, and a Successful Career

  • News from our network
Joey Miller, a New Braunfels, Texas resident, knows the value of hard work and discipline. Growing up in a small Oregon community, he witnessed his family, friends, and neighbors laboring daily in paper, lumber, steel, and manufacturing plants. When his son was born during his senior year of high school, Miller was thrust into the dual roles of worker and single parent, facing adult responsibilities at a young age. "When I turned 21, I got a job at the Albany Papermill and learned what long hours and rotating shifts were all about," Miller said in a recent interview. "I led the mill in overtime and made a nice living, but I was working incredible hours at a place without certainty of being around for the next 20 years." Then fate intervened. While working at the mill, Miller became interested in managing his 401(k) and immersed himself in learning about the markets and reaching out to people in the investing space. His passion for finance and helping people secure their investment futures set him on a path that would change his life. "I met real estate investors, options traders, and value stock investors, and I felt I finally found my niche," he said. "I left the mill to work for an options educator for a couple of years and ultimately started my own company. I realized that no matter how well I taught people to invest for themselves, they would constantly break the rules or don't have the time. That's when I chose to get my securities licenses and start investing directly for people." Joey Miller's Work Ethic Propels Him Into Purpose Joey Miller's days at the papermill are long behind him, but his dedication to his craft remains stronger than ever. "My success is a testament to my hard work and dedication, often surpassing that of others," Miller shared. "I invest alongside my clients, sharing in their goals and learning from our collective experiences. We celebrate our successes and learn from our failures, always striving to improve our investment strategies." When asked about a defining moment that shaped his career, Miller recalled a pivotal experience about two years after he left the paper mill. The mill had closed, forcing all his former colleagues to seek new careers. This event made him realize he wanted a job he loved—one that offered stability and longevity. It was a turning point in his life, a moment of clarity that propelled him to pursue a career in finance and to dedicate himself to helping others secure their financial futures. He desired a profession where his efforts and work values would allow him to remain in a field he was passionate about while helping people he cared about achieve good returns in the marketplace. He wanted a career that would continue despite the political environment. His dreams came true. "I've encouraged high school graduates considering struggling fields to look into finance, economics, and business as these areas grow. This summer, I'm mentoring a student who was initially interested in liberal arts but is now exploring finance for his future degree. We discuss the marketplace, what job fields are growing, and which are contracting. We also discuss what this country needs more of and which areas are decreasing." Joey Miller: 'I've Been Blessed' With Great Role Models When asked about the people who have had the most significant impact on his life and career, Joey Miller reflects on the various role models he has encountered. "I've been blessed with many role models, some who taught me what to aspire to, and some that showed me what not to be like," Miller said. "I had great parents who taught me to work hard, be independent, and face challenges head-on. In my working career, I have had a few mentors who demonstrated how to conduct business and offered insight into new investments, tools, and economists. I've seen companies struggle and succeed and struggle and fail, and it normally comes down to being proactive and not hiding from challenges. When I see a problem, I like to tackle it while it's small so it doesn't get bigger." Moving Forward Joey Miller's journey from papermill worker to renowned investment advisor is a testament to living with a spirit of excellence. Through hard work, continuous learning, and a servanthood spirit, Miller has built a successful career that secures his own future and helps others turn their dreams into realities. His story inspires those facing similar challenges, illustrating that with determination and the proper guidance, one can turn any circumstance into an opportunity for growth and success. Miller is deeply committed to his clients' success and has traveled across 40 states to meet them and assess potential investments. Outside of work, Joey enjoys life in New Braunfels, Texas, with his wife, Kristen, and their four children. Despite his busy schedule, he makes time for his family and hobbies, such as fishing in Alaska and participating in the sport of reining. "As much as I love my career, being a husband and father is my greatest accomplishment," Miller says. "I just want to do life with my family and help others along the way." By Chris Bates
