For those who have not yet heard, this Saturday, May 6, is Community Day here in Sea Isle City – and I hope as many people as possible can participate in one or more of the activities we have planned for you.
Our Community Day lineup includes a City Council meeting at 9 a.m.; a free document shredding event from 9 a.m. to 12 noon (sponsored by First Bank of Sea Isle City); a municipal bicycle auction at 10:15 a.m.; a “meet and greet” with City officials and representatives from local civic organizations from 10 a.m. to 12 noon; and an Awards Ceremony at 11:30 a.m.
Attending our annual Community Day celebration is the perfect way to learn more about Sea Isle City, meet your neighbors, discover new ways to become involved in your community, and possibly ride home on a slightly used bicycle.
For more information about Community Day, please read the special section in this week’s newsletter – and plan to join us on May 6. Also, please be aware that City Hall offices will be open for business on Saturday, May 6, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, as part of the city’s efforts to expand available hours of operation to the public.
Another popular event that takes place each spring is the Chamber of Commerce’s City-Wide Yard Sale, which is scheduled for Saturday, May 13. This event allows local property owners to sell any unwanted items they may have, and it’s also ideal for shoppers who are in search of great bargains.
Our friends at the Chamber of Commerce have informed us that they have already registered more than 50 local participating properties – and they are still collecting addresses. So, if you have things you would like to sell or if you are a tried-and-true bargain hunter, you won’t want to miss the Chamber’s City-Wide Yard Sale on May 13.
Many people in our community are also looking forward to the Sea Isle City Garden Club’s 2023 Flower Sale on May 20 and 21 at Dealy Field. During this event, Garden Club members will sell a wide variety of beautiful flowers that will enhance any home or garden.
I want to thank all of the Garden Club’s members for making this annual event so successful – not only because it helps beautify Sea Isle City, but also because the proceeds from the Flower Sale support the Garden Club’s charitable endeavors.
I remind everyone that the Public Works Department will conduct a citywide curbside bulk trash collection on Thursday, May 11, which will be the final bulk trash collection until the fall.
Knowing that this is the time of year when many folks clean out their garages, purchase new kitchen appliances, and decide that it’s time to replace their living room furniture, I ask everyone to please be mindful of the upcoming bulk trash collection so you won’t have to store your unwanted bulk items in your garage until the autumn.
Please remember that you cannot bring bulk trash to the Trash Depot near the Sea Isle Bridge, because that area is just for regular household trash and recycling drop-offs.
Just as many local property owners go to great lengths to ensure that they are prepared for the approaching summer season by performing “spring cleaning” rituals, your city employees are also working hard to ensure that Sea Isle City is clean and ready for the summer ahead.
In addition to our municipal employees mowing lawns, trimming hedges, and ensuring that our facilities are prepared for use, I have asked the Cape May County Road Department to send a street sweeper to Sea Isle City to clean the entire length of Landis Avenue, which is a county road.
Because we are dealing with such a long stretch of road, the street sweeper is scheduled to be in town over a four-day period.
Street cleaning operations will take place between 6 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 16 and 17, along the southbound side of Landis (the west side); and on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 23 and 24, along the northbound side of Landis (the east side).
I respectfully ask all motorists to avoid parking on the portions of Landis Avenue that are scheduled to be cleaned on these days and times, because we don’t want the street sweeper to miss any spots – and I thank everyone in advance for your assistance and patience during this important cleaning effort.
Please mark your calendar now and plan to attend Sea Isle’s annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 29 – because freedom isn’t free, and it’s very important for all of us to honor and remember the men and women of the United States Military who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.
