In 1982, during Sea Isle City’s Centennial year, a group of local residents founded the Sea Isle City Historical Society and Museum – and during the four decades that followed, countless people have enjoyed the organization’s impressive collection of artifacts, photographs and keepsakes from Sea Isle City’s past.

Earlier this year, the members of the Historical Society announced the appointment of their new President, Ron Kovatis, who is originally from Drexel Hill, Pa. and is now a year-round resident of Sea Isle City.

He has replaced President Abby Powell, who will continue to volunteer with the Historical Society in various capacities.

“I’ve learned a great deal about Sea Isle City, I’ve met many wonderful people, and I have made many friends since I joined the Historical Society – and now I am looking forward to volunteering at the museum under Ron’s direction,” Powell said.

Historical Society President Ron Kovatis explains one of the many artifacts visitors can find inside the museum.

“I plan to follow the fine example set by Abby, because I can’t imagine that anyone could do a better job than her,” said Kovatis. “I look forward to working with all of our volunteers during the Historical Society’s 40th year – and welcoming visitors to our museum this summer.”

Besides helping preserve Sea Isle City’s rich history, the new President will also assist in the day-to-day operations of the Historical Museum, which is located on the first floor of the Sea Isle City Library at 4800 Central Avenue.

In addition to thousands of vintage photos and objects from the past, the museum also offers seasonal displays, a “History Scavenger Hunt” for children, a gift shop, and an outdoor Memorial Garden, where visitors can enjoy additional artifacts, including a Victorian-era statue of the Roman god Neptune holding his famous trident.

The Neptune statue is the only known remaining piece of art that Sea Isle City founder Charles Landis purchased for the City during a trip to Italy.

As eager as he is to welcome visitors to the Historical Museum this summer, the new Historical Society President is also hoping to welcome new volunteers who will greet guests as they enter the museum.

According to Kovatis, volunteers will be trained and do not need a degree in history. The main requirement for volunteering is an appreciation for Sea Isle City.

“This year we are hoping to increase our number of volunteers,” he said. “If you love Sea Isle City and history – you will love volunteering at our museum.”

This summer, the Sea Isle City Historical Museum is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Fridays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. (closed Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays). Admission to the museum is free, however donations are appreciated.
