“When I turned 21, I got a job at the Albany Papermill and learned what long hours and rotating shifts were all about,” Miller said in a recent interview. “I led the mill in overtime and made a nice living, but I was working incredible hours at a place without certainty of being around for the next 20 years.”
Then fate intervened.
While working at the mill, Miller became interested in managing his 401(k) and immersed himself in learning about the markets and reaching out to people in the investing space. His passion for finance and helping people secure their investment futures set him on a path that would change his life.
“I met real estate investors, options traders, and value stock investors, and I felt I finally found my niche,” he said. “I left the mill to work for an options educator for a couple of years and ultimately started my own company. I realized that no matter how well I taught people to invest for themselves, they would constantly break the rules or don’t have the time. That’s when I chose to get my securities licenses and start investing directly for people.”

The mill had closed, forcing all his former colleagues to seek new careers. This event made him realize he wanted a job he loved—one that offered stability and longevity. It was a turning point in his life, a moment of clarity that propelled him to pursue a career in finance and to dedicate himself to helping others secure their financial futures.

“At some point, I’ll take a walk and listen to Bible In A Year to get some fresh air and exercise before returning to my office to check for any updates,” Miller says. “By 5 p.m., I’m in daddy mode, running the kids around to their sporting events and caring for the house with my wife.”
Miller and his wife, Kristen, are the proud parents of four children, and the family is actively involved in their community, consistently giving back to others.
Joey Miller is also passionate about mentoring the next generation of investment advisors. Over the past decade, he has guided dozens of interns, showing them the ropes of the finance world. He has helped these interns secure positions at top financial firms and has even assisted one intern in transitioning from an undesirable position to a job she loves.

“With each person, I discuss the importance of focusing on a career that will be relevant in the future,” Miller says. “I’ve encouraged high school graduates considering struggling fields to look into finance, economics, and business as these areas grow. This summer, I’m mentoring a student who was initially interested in liberal arts but is now exploring finance for his future degree. We discuss the marketplace, what job fields are growing, and which are contracting. We also discuss what this country needs more of and which areas are decreasing.”

When asked about the people who have had the most significant impact on his life and career, Joey Miller reflects on the various role models he has encountered.
“I’ve been blessed with many role models, some who taught me what to aspire to, and some that showed me what not to be like,” Miller said. “I had great parents who taught me to work hard, be independent, and face challenges head-on. In my working career, I have had a few mentors who demonstrated how to conduct business and offered insight into new investments, tools, and economists. I’ve seen companies struggle and succeed and struggle and fail, and it normally comes down to being proactive and not hiding from challenges. When I see a problem, I like to tackle it while it’s small so it doesn’t get bigger.”
