Before enrolling himself in the American education system and taking the first steps toward embarking on his professional career path, Chike Aguh, M.D. grew up in poverty under the oppressive heat of the Nigerian sun. While immigrating to the United States helped to afford him greater educational opportunities later on, it did little to better his immediate financial life.
Fortunately, relocating to American soil did provide Dr. Aguh with at least one opportunity that would pay off later. Whereas only 7% of the population in Nigeria graduates from college, a statistically significant 63% of first-generation Nigerian Americans are able to achieve academic success.
The odds of Nigerian immigrants earning undergraduate degrees or even doctorates continue to rise with subsequent generations. This is great news for the Aguh’s four children. As a dedicated father, one of the greatest accomplishments of Chike Aguh, M.D. is to simply provide for his children, and to be able to encourage them to pursue a path of purpose.
Dr. Chike Aguh, Gynecologist – Professional Life
Before his 35 years as a physician, Chike Aguh, M.D. had to slowly climb the ladder of academia that awaits all those pursuing careers in medicine. After receiving his BA in biochemistry from the University of Texas, he moved to Grenada in 1979 to pursue a medical degree at St. George’s University.
He then moved to Newark, New Jersey, where he followed a flexible internship with two residencies, first in pediatrics and then in obstetrics and gynecology. The latter would shape the entirety of his lifelong career. Beginning his rise to success early on, Chike Aguh, M.D. has held such positions over the years as:
- Obstetric co-director at Somerset Medical Center
- Co-director of OB/GYN services at Plainfield Neighborhood Health Center
- Co-director and clinical instructor at Somerset’s Family Medicine Residency program
- OB/GYN department chairman at Somerset Medical
- Sole proprietor at Franklin Women Care
- Clinical assistant professor of reproductive sciences at Rutgers University
Before stepping away from his private practice to focus on educating other blossoming OB/GYN specialists in his craft, Dr. Chike Aguh achieved a five-star patient experience rating due to the well-documented thoroughness of his examinations as rated by users on the health pages of U.S. News. This, however, is the least of his accomplishments.
Chike Aguh’s Accolades and Awards
When Chike first began heading OB/GYN services at Plainfield Neighborhood Health Center on 7th Avenue in 1990, he appeared on ABC World News with Peter Jennings to advertise the clinic’s opening. While a great experience, this hardly compares to the esteem of his many more formal accolades and awards. A few such accolades include:

- Somerset Medical Center – Recognition for 15 years of service (2009)

- St. Peter’s University Hospital – Appreciation for 25 years of service (2017)
Along the way, Dr. Aguh also operated as the vice chairman of ANPA’s (Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas) New Jersey chapter and spent time on the board of Nigerian charity organization Songhai Charities. Prior to the COVID outbreak, he organized several medical missions to impoverished areas of his home country.
