This is not a job for wimps or slackers.
It requires the physically demanding duties of collecting the trash, cleaning the beaches and making sure the public bathrooms are spotless – along with other manual labor.
“It is a physical job and an important one,” said Katherine Custer, public information officer for Sea Isle City.
Sea Isle is looking to hire janitors and other seasonal employees for its Public Works Department in preparation for the summer tourism season, when tens of thousands of visitors descend on the beach resort for their vacations.
“We have to expand our staff to take care of everybody,” Custer noted of the influx of summer tourists.
City officials say that seasonal workers who do a good job may land full-time employment with Sea Isle.
The pay is $14 per hour. Employees must be at least 18 years old.
Public Works employees are among the seasonal workers hired every summer, including lifeguards, beach tag inspectors and recreation personnel.
But the physical demands of the jobs in the Public Works Department can make it somewhat difficult to find enough workers to fill all of the openings, city officials acknowledge.
“It is a challenge. Overall, we are doing OK,” City Business Administrator George Savastano said.
Custer explained that the Public Works Department is responsible for an array of duties around the city. They include collecting the trash and recycling, maintaining the beaches, cleaning the public bathrooms and landscaping the gardens, playgrounds and recreation fields.
During snowstorms, the Public Works Department plows the streets. The department also oversees the city’s water and sewer system.
