Overnight roadway closures on the Townsends Inlet Bridge will be extended in March due to delays with a construction project caused by the recent blizzard.
Traffic will not be allowed to cross the bridge Monday through Thursday nights, March 2 through March 13, between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., weather permitting.
During the closures, a construction contractor will continue installing foundation pilings beneath the bridge that form the structural framing system for a new fender system.
The fender system project is essential for protecting the bridge from boat collisions and enhancing its long-term resilience, according to the Cape May County Bridge Commission.
The Townsends Inlet Bridge connects Sea Isle City and Avalon. Motorists traveling between both towns during the bridge’s closure hours will be detoured to Avalon Boulevard or Sea Isle Boulevard to access Route 9.
The detour route will be clearly marked with temporary roadway signage in advance of and along the detour. Motorists are encouraged to plan alternate routes, allow additional travel time and follow all posted signage.
“The Cape May County Bridge Commission appreciates the public’s continued patience and cooperation as this important infrastructure project progresses toward completion,” the agency said in a statement.
