MEGA MILLIONS® rolled out big changes in April 2025 that have completely reshaped how you play this popular multi-state draw game. That’s why we’ve put together this article, outlining what's changed—and what it could mean for your gameplay.
Updated ticket pricing and gameplay
The biggest change? To purchase a MEGA MILLIONS jackpot Lottery ticket, you’ll now need to spend five dollars per play. This is only the second time in the game's 20+ year history that the ticket price has changed. But you might be pleased to know that the Megaplier feature is now included with every ticket.
Before, you had to pay extra for the Megaplier. Now, it's automatic, meaning your non-jackpot winnings can be multiplied up to 10 times at no extra cost. Therefore, if you match the five white balls without the Mega Ball, you could win up to 10 million dollars, depending on the multiplier drawn.
Better odds and bigger prizes
The odds of winning the jackpot have also improved. You still pick five numbers from one to 70 and one Mega Ball from one to 25, but the revised odds give you a better shot at the top prize.
Non-jackpot prizes have increased, too. Every win will now be worth more than what you paid for your ticket. These changes mean better value with each purchase, regardless of how many numbers you match.
Jackpots start bigger and grow faster
The jackpot now starts at a higher amount and grows more quickly when nobody wins. This means record-breaking prizes could happen faster than before.
Draws are still every Tuesday and Friday at 11:00 PM ET. You can play through licensed Lottery retailers or online via the official West Virginia Lottery website or app.
What happened to saved plays?
After the April 4, 2025, draw, all previously saved play slips were deleted. If you had MEGA MILLIONS® set for auto-renewal, those subscriptions were paused on March 11. You’ll also find the Jackpot Chase feature, which refers to the built-in multiplier that was introduced as part of the update. It automatically applies a multiplier of 2X to 10X to non-jackpot prizes, and it’s included with every $5 ticket purchase — there's no need to pay extra or opt in like with the old Megaplier feature.
Auto-renewal is back now, and you can purchase entries for up to 26 consecutive draws using the new ticket structure. You'll need to create fresh play slips with the current game rules, or use Quick Pick for randomly generated numbers.
Playing online in West Virginia
If you play MEGA MILLIONS® online in West Virginia, these updates happen automatically when you buy tickets. You'll see the new ticket price in your cart, and all non-jackpot wins will include the Megaplier.
The official West Virginia Lottery website and app securely handle all purchases and prize claims through your verified account. You'll receive notifications when your numbers match.
The app manages deposit limits and tracks game history. iPhone users can download it from the App Store, and Android users can access it directly through the West Virginia Lottery's website.
