You may have thought the Philadelphia Eagles coaching staff and management team would enjoy a well-deserved break after guiding the team to Super Bowl LIX glory over the Kansas City Chiefs, but that has not been the case. It has been a busy offseason at Lincoln Financial Field with several incoming and outgoing players, and the hard work is not yet finished as decisions must be made about picking up the fifth-year options of several 2022 NFL Draft first-round picks.
The Eagles have signed nine unrestricted free agents, tied Zack Baun to a three-year, $51 million contract extension, and handed Ben VanSumeren a one-year deal. Four members of the current roster were first-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft, meaning the Eagles must move quickly to decide their futures. Lewis Cine, Jahan Dotson, Kenyon Green, and Jordan Davis are heading into their contract year. Which will see their fifth-year option picked up?
The Philadelphia Eagle’s defensive line was one of the primary reasons the team became Super Bowl LIX champions and why the top online US sportsbooks make the Eagles favorites to win back-to-back titles. Although Jordan Davis, the 13th overall pick in 2022, played 15 regular season games in 2024, pundits do not believe he made as much of an impact as you would expect such an early pick to make.
Davis was a standout player for the Georgia Bulldogs, finishing his college career with 91 tackles, 7.0 sacks, and 26 quarterback hits from 47 appearances. He ran a 4.78-second 40-yard dash at the 2022 NFL Combine, which made him only the third player over 330 pounds to complete the run in less than five seconds.
Davis’ numbers have been OK across his first 47 games in an Eagles uniform. He has registered 90 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and six quarterback hits; the latter is 20 fewer than across the same number of games while in college. There is every chance the Eagles will go for a Defensive Interior during the 2025 NFL Draft, which could spell bad news for the former Georgia Bulldog.
Lewis Cine’s professional football journey has not gone according to plan, leaving many football experts wondering about his future. Cine’s story is a real rags-to-riches affair. Born in Haiti, Cine and his family immigrated to the United States when he was four. Cine’s talent became apparent during high school, and his development was helped by receiving coaching from Deion Sanders, a Hall of Fame cornerback, while attending Trinity Christian School in Texas.
Cine committed to the Georgia Bulldogs, doing so from 2019 until 2021. The Minnesota Vikings selected Cine as the 32nd pick in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft and handed him a four-year, fully guaranteed rookie contract of $11.49 million. Unfortunately, Cine suffered a compound fracture to his lower left leg in Week 4, resulting in him missing the rest of his rookie season.
He played in three games during the 2023 regular season before the Vikings released him, making him a free agent. Cine joined the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad in August 2024 and made only one appearance.
The Eagles signed Cine from the Bills practice squad in January 2025. He’s yet to play a competitive game for the Eagles and will likely find playing time limited with Reed Blankenship, Sydney Brown, Tristin McCollum, and Avonte Maddox on the roster.
Cine has obvious talent, but it remains to be seen whether he can return to a high level after his horrific injury. Sadly, football is a results-based game and doesn’t have much time for sentiment.
Kenyon Green only joined the Eagles on March 12 as part of an exchange deal that saw safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson head to the Houston Texans but it remains to be seen if the Eagles will trigger Green’s fifth-year option.
The Texans selected the former Texas A&M guard with the 15th overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, and they wasted no time in throwing Green into the starting lineup. He appeared in 15 games as a rookie, starting 14, but his PFF grade was a mere 37.7. Such a low rank positioned Green 77th out of 77 graded guards.
Green would have loved to have made amends for a rocky rookie season, but a shoulder injury sustained in the Texans’ final preseason game ruled him out for the entire 2023 campaign. Green returned to action last season, playing 12 games and ranking with PFF as the fifth-worst guard in the league.
Unless Green has a spectacular 2025 season, it is challenging to imagine a world in which the Eagles activate his fifth-year option.
The Washington Commanders selected Jahan Dotson as the 16th overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft following his impressive college career with Penn State. Dotson played 42 games over four years, scoring 25 touchdowns and racking up 2,757 receiving yards at an average of 15.1 yards per reception.
A hamstring injury ruled Dotson out for five games during his rookie season, but he still finished with 523 yards and seven touchdowns from 35 receptions. He played 17 games in 2023, resulting in 49 receptions but his yards and touchdown numbers dwindled.
Dotson joined the Eagles in August 2024, ultimately playing 17 games, starting six. He also played in four postseason games, including a 27-yard reception in the first quarter that was initially given as a touchdown. However, upon review, it was just short of the goal line. Jalen Hurts scored a one-yard touchdown run on the very next play, putting the Eagles on their way to a memorable Super Bowl victory.
Another season developing alongside the likes of A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith should stand Dotson in good stead and see that fifth-year option triggered.
