Time spent in the great outdoors provides an abundance of benefits that range from relaxation to an improved mood. In fact, 67 minutes spent outside each day is all it takes for Americans to “feel their best,” a survey conducted by Talker Research on behalf of RVshare reveals. Whether the goal is a day trip or a weekend getaway, there are a wealth of natural elements to explore throughout the state. Upstate, visitors can find outdoor adventures that range from picking fresh produce to a variety of state park locations.
A new meaning to farm-fresh
Beyond the salt water taffy, pork rolls, and Italian hot dogs, New Jersey is home to an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. In fact, the state is well-regarded as one of the top ten producers of several fruits and vegetables, such as blueberries, tomatoes, bell peppers, spinach, and squash, according to the state Department of Agriculture. Self-proclaimed foodies who wish to embark on a unique day trip can get in touch with nature while picking their own produce at a local farm. Jersey City Times highlights different farms where visitors can partake in berry picking, such as Alstede Farms and Battleview Orchards. While these farms are each about an hour’s drive from Jersey City, the journey is well worthwhile.
Those who make the trip out to Alstede Farms can find a variety of opportunities for fresh-picked local produce. The farm’s website highlights the general harvest schedule, which ranges from strawberries and peas that can be found in late May through June to spring vegetables (such as radishes, cilantro, and beets), which can typically be found in mid-June. Raspberries, blueberries, sweet corn, tomatoes, apples, and pumpkins are just a few other options that can be found at their own respective seasons throughout the year, though it’s always a good idea to check the site’s daily schedule to see what is available on a particular day.
Hidden gem parks have plenty to explore
Upstate New Jersey is home to a variety of natural landscapes open for exploration. In Essex County, Mills Reservation is one county park that has plenty to offer. The reservation itself is an impressive 157.15 acres, and provides the opportunity for a variety of outdoor adventures. This includes several walking and jogging trails, which makes the reservation perfect for those who are keen to get some fresh air and exercise. The reservation is also home to a unique hidden gem, as one of the four primary trails leads to a cliff that overlooks New York City, the Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs highlights.
High Point State Park in Sussex is another option for visitors to explore. High Point serves as the summit of the Kittatinny Ridge and features incredible views as a result of the high elevation. Activities to take part in include swimming (when lifeguards are on duty), hiking, skiing, and snowshoeing. The park also has campgrounds that feature group campsites as well as cabins for those who wish to turn a visit into a weekend getaway. While you’re there, a visit to the High Point Monument (located at the top of the mountain’s summit) is a great way to learn a bit more about New Jersey’s history. The monument commemorates NJ veterans of all wars, and was constructed in 1928 (and completed in 1930). The 220-foot structure offers the opportunity to both appreciate the history involved, as well as the spectacular 360-degree views that can be found from the observation deck.
Located a little over an hour from High Point State Park, Jersey City is home to Liberty State Park, which offers experiences that combine the best of Jersey and NYC. In addition to eco-friendly activities like cycling and walking, visitors can head to the Liberty Science Center, board a ferry to Ellis Island or the Statue of Liberty, and enjoy iconic views of the Manhattan skyline. The park is also a great location for an outdoor picnic. When planning a trip, however, a conveniently located and reputable accommodation is essential. Jersey City hotels are an idyllic place to rest, especially after a day full of water sports and outdoor activities. Options range from the Westin Jersey City Newport near the Hudson River to the Sonesta Simply Suites Jersey City — to name just a few, each with comfort and practicality in mind.
New Jersey features an abundance of opportunities for those who wish to get out and explore the natural landscapes of the Garden State. Those who have plans to spend time upstate, however, can have a memorable time with locations and activities that range from fresh produce to state parks.
