Firefighters battled a raging fire that swept through a public storage facility in Middle Township.
The blaze broke out Wednesday morning at the Burleigh Mini Storage site on Shunpike Road near Indian Trail Road, Middle Township police said.
Police posted a message on Facebook that emergency crews were on the scene and asked residents to avoid the area so that firefighters could safely extinguish the blaze. Shunpike Road was later reopened.
Video and photos posted on Facebook by Dansdroneshots609 showed flames shooting in the air and clouds of thick black smoke billowing from the storage building.
The fire was brought under control by Wednesday afternoon. Multiple fire departments from the surrounding area fought the blaze.
One unidentified person was transported to Cooper Medical Center in Camden for treatment of smoke inhalation, police said.
The fire is under investigation by the Middle Township Police Department Major Crimes Unit, Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office and the New Jersey State Fire Marshal’s Office. The cause was not immediately announced.
