And you actually thought winter might be milder in February?

Well, here we are, not even two weeks into February, and the latest forecast calls for 4 to 6 inches of snow to blanket South Jersey and the shore starting Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning.

Some localized areas in Cape May County could get as much as 8 inches of snow, according to the forecast.

At the height of the storm, snowfall rates greater than 1 inch per hour are expected to create dangerous travel conditions. Motorists are asked to stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary, police say.

“Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency,” according to a weather alert by police departments at the shore.

The exact storm track and intensity remain uncertain, so remain alert for adjustments to the snowfall forecast.

After the first storm dies out, another one is expected to bring an additional 1 to 2 inches of snow and sleet on Wednesday into Thursday in South Jersey.

Additional accumulating snowfall and/or a wintry mix are possible Wednesday night, with a change to rain anticipated near and south of the I-95 corridor, the National Weather Service said.

The Cape May County Office of Emergency Management has issued a “Code Blue” advisory for all of Cape May County effective 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday. A Code Blue is designed to protect the homeless population and get them into shelters during the freezing weather.

Following are emergency contact numbers for local utility companies should you experience outages or other problems during the storm:

  • Atlantic City Electric: 800-833-7476
  • South Jersey Gas: 888-766-9900
  • Comcast Cable: 800-COMCAST (800-266-2278)

The utility companies recommend you contact them directly as soon as you experience a problem so that they can properly track outages and repairs.
