Patrick Mahomes had high praise for Jalen Hurts as the Kansas City Chiefs and Eagles prepare to face off in the Super Bowl for the second time in three seasons.
When asked by Jeff Kerr of CBS about Hurts still having some critics, Mahomes had this to say:
Asked Patrick Mahomes why Jalen Hurts is still doubted.
“I honestly have no idea. It doesn’t make any sense to me. He goes out there and has success every single year.
“When you look at his career. All he does is win…I honestly do not understand it.” #Eagles #Chiefs pic.twitter.com/YhaDzI9XpK
There's probably a couple different discussions to sift through here.
Coming into the NFC Championship Game, there were questions about Hurts because he had underwhelmed in playoff wins against the Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams, and those were his first two games since returning from a concussion that he suffered in Week 16. Hurts also appeared to injure his left knee in the 28-22 win over the Rams in the Divisional Round. So it was fair to have some questions about how he would perform against the Washington Commanders with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line. To his credit, Hurts turned in his finest performance of the season, completing 20 of 28 passes for 246 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for three scores.
From a bigger picture sense, Hurts isn't mentioned in the same category as Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen and Joe Burrow. And while this may not be popular on a Philadelphia sports site, he's just not in that category. He's a very good quarterback, and has made the best of having an excellent team around him by leading the Eagles to two NFC titles in three years. For what it's worth, he's got a 46-20 career record as a starter. He's been tremendous. But Mahomes has a chance to challenge Tom Brady as the greatest quarterback of all-time. Jackson is about to win his third NFL MVP, edging out Allen, who might be the most physically-gifted player to ever play the position. And anyone who has watched Burrow try to overcome the challenges of a Cincinnati Bengals team that has historically been incompetent recognizes how special of a player he is. Those four quarterbacks are in a class of their own, and Hurts is somewhere between five and 10. That's not a dis of him, it's just reality.
That aside, Hurts outplayed Mahomes in Super Bowl LVII. Much is made of his second quarter fumble that the Chiefs returned for a touchdown, but that was really the only mistake Hurts made the entire game. He threw for 304 yards and a touchdown, and also led the Eagles with 70 rushing yards, scoring three touchdowns on the ground. If he has a similar performance Sunday — this time with Saquon Barkley also part of a loaded offense — the Eagles are probably going to be hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. And no one can doubt that.
