The Sixers are acquiring shooting guard Quentin Grimes and their own 2025 second-round pick from the Dallas Mavericks for Caleb Martin, according to Shams Charania.
Grimes, 24, is shooting 41 percent from beyond the arc this season. More than half of his shot volume has come from three-point range, per Cleaning The Glass.
Martin, 29, has missed 17 games this season with various injuries, one of which visibly affected his shooting. The latest injury, a hip sprain, didn't seem to have a clear timeline for recovery.
Grimes is younger, a better shooter and cheaper. The net cash flow saves management some luxury tax dollars. But, on top of that, he's a restricted free agent coming off his rookie contract this summer. The Sixers will be able to match any offer sheet Grimes receives and will have his Bird rights, providing some flexibility on the cap sheet.
The Sixers getting their own second-round pick in this summer's draft back is a fascinating leg of this trade beyond the players involved.
To some, it might hint at their strategy for the remainder of the season. You target your own pick back in a trade because you have a sense for where your season might end. While Philadelphia has yet to take any obvious measures toward bottoming out, the Sixers now have a smidgen of incentive to lean in that direction should the Play-In picture become less appetizing to them.
As an aside, Martin is a really good dude with a supremely underrated style of play. Enjoyed talking to him while he was here.
