Neither team really deserved to win that game, but the Eagles – and Jalen Hurts – absolutely deserved it less.
The Los Angeles Chargers defeated the Philadelphia Eagles by a score of 22-19 in overtime on Monday night. It was an ugly game from both offenses, and the vast majority of the scoring came from field goals. Let's get right to it.
And it wasn't even close.
The reigning Super Bowl MVP looked like a shell of himself, sailing passes high over his receivers' heads all night and missing throws he usually completes with ease. Hurts put up the worst stat line of his career: he completed 21 of 40 passes for 240 yards, no touchdowns, one fumble lost, and four (count 'em, four) interceptions.
It was the first four-interception game of Hurts' career, and each pick was more devastating than the last. In fact, Hurts – who vocally prides himself on not turning the ball over – became the first NFL player since at least 1978 to turn the ball over twice in a single play.

Just two plays after that, Hurts' third pick came on a high pass that deflected right off of A.J. Brown's hands and into the waiting arms of Chargers cornerback Cam Hart.

On the topic of Brown, he certainly didn't help Hurts out. His lack of effort stood out all night, especially on this would-be third down conversion in overtime:

And if Brown had caught that ball, then Hurts' game-ending fourth pick of the night might not have happened.

All in all, Hurts' uncharacteristic five turnovers were the reason the Eagles lost the game. Can't blame everything on Kevin Patullo this time. For the first time in a while, the Birds will have to take a good, long look at the quarterback position.
God bless Vic Fangio for (yet again) singlehandedly keeping the Eagles in the game.
The Birds' defensive line gave Justin Herbert fits to the tune of seven (!) sacks and 11 quarterback hits. The whole group feasted, and Jalyx Hunt continued his breakout season by leading the way with 2.5 sacks.
In the absence of Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis stepped up big-time. The big man constantly made his presence felt in the run game, all while racking up 1.5 sacks, including this clutch 3rd down sack in the fourth quarter:

Davis is up to 4.5 sacks on the year. Entering 2025, he had just 3.5 sacks across three seasons.
Byron Young matched Davis with 1.5 sacks Monday night, Nakobe Dean snagged one, and Zack Baun threw in half a sack for good measure.
Herbert ended the game with a 68.3% pressure rate, good for sixth-highest in a game over the last 10 seasons, according to Next Gen Stats. Hats off to Vic Fangio, and hats off to the entire defense. Usually, when a quarterback coughs up five turnovers in a game, their team doesn't stand a chance of winning. The Eagles defense willed the game into overtime.
Why didn't the Eagles just stick with Britain Covey for the whole season?!
In five games as a kickoff returner, Xavier Gipson gained 177 yards on seven returns. In seven games, John Metchie III managed 120 yards on seven returns.
Monday night alone, Covey totaled 103 yards on just four kickoff returns. On three punt returns, he added 54 more yards, and his 22-yard punt return was the longest of the Eagles' season.
Covey did the best he could to set up the Eagles' stagnant offense with good field position. On average, Philadelphia's offense began drives on their own 31.3-yard line after Covey's returns. Before Monday, the Eagles' average starting position of their own 29.1-yard line was ranked 29th in the NFL. That may not seem like much of a change, but it's a notable improvement, and it definitely passed the eye test. Covey's resurgence was a welcome sight in an otherwise miserable game.
Well, the Eagles have what should be a bounce-back game, but it might end up like the 2023 Arizona Cardinals game if the Birds can't stop their freefall. The 2-11 Las Vegas Raiders head into town to face the Eagles Sunday at 1 p.m. Hopefully the entire organization can get it together in time.
