Atlantic City man who skipped stabbing sentencing now faces seven cases in six towns

An Atlantic City man who never showed up to his sentencing in a stabbing last year now faces multiple forgery and theft charges in several other towns, including several in Cape May County.

Nicholas Hall, 37, had a busy July, according to charges filed against him out of Ocean City, Avalon, North Wildwood, Vineland and Salem County.

He racked up seven cases out of six towns in four counties within a week, court records show.

Even Hall appears to have confused where his alleged crimes occurred.

"I'm currently released on Level 3 conditions, out of Salem, Gloucester County," he told Judge Timothy Maguire during his first appearance Tuesday on charges out of Cape May County.

Salem is in Salem County, where he was issued a summons for bad checks, court records show.

His Gloucester County release appears to be on a warrant out of Mantua for check forgery from July 8.

Hall pleaded guilty last year to third-degree aggravated assault in the Dec. 4, 2023, stabbing of a 45-year-old man in the first block of South Iowa Avenue.

At the time, Hall appeared to be rendering aid to the victim, claiming he witnessed the robbery that left his neighbor wounded.

Hall later was charged with the crime and ordered held in jail pending the outcome of the case.

That outcome came June 5, 2024, when Hall pleaded guilty under an agreement that called for probation. He was then released pending sentencing Aug. 14, 2024.

Hall failed to appear, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office confirmed to BreakingAC.

His sentencing in that case is now set for Sept. 3.

But before that, he will have a detention hearing before a Cape May County Superior Court judge to determine whether he will be held in two separate cases in which he tried cashing forged checks.

He was successful in cashing a $1,850 check at Crest Savings Bank in North Wildwood on July 8, according to the charges obtained by BreakingAC.

That same day, he did not have the same luck at the Sturdy Savings Bank in Avalon.

When Hall tried to cash a check for $1,877.23 there, a bank employee informed him that they would be checking with the maker of the check to verify it, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

At that point, Hall took his identification and the check, and left, causing the bank to put out an alert to its other branches, the affidavit states. That is when it was learned Hall allegedly tried to cash other fraudulent checks.

Sturdy Bank also learned the original check was made out to Western Pest Services for $77.23, before it was altered, according to the affidavit.

Hall also faces four counts out of Ocean City, including forgery. altering a check and theft by deception. He was given a summons out of that municipality.

His prior criminal history includes 20 disorderly persons convictions and five prior indictable convictions out of Ocean County, according to information previously reported by BreakingAC from his detention hearing in Atlantic County.

He is currently in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
