The procession to the beach is led by parishioners carrying a St. Joseph's banner and a statue of the Virgin Mary.
Members of St, Joseph Catholic Church invite the community to their annual Wedding of the Sea Mass and Ocean Blessing Ceremony on Friday, August 15, in honor of the Feast of the Assumption.
The ceremony will begin with a special Mass at 4 p.m. inside the church at 4300 Landis Avenue, followed by a 5 p.m. procession to the 44th Street beach. Parish clergy will bless the ocean.
Each year, hundreds of church parishioners and members of the community celebrate an ancient tradition by staging a procession through the streets of Sea Isle City and then watching from the beach as a ceremonial wreath is tossed into the ocean.
The ceremony is held in honor of the Feast of the Assumption, which commemorates the belief that Mary, the Blessed Mother of Christ, was “assumed” into heaven.
