Sea Isle City officials were phlabbergasted … er, flabbergasted, when thousands of Philly sports fans showed up on Aug. 20 for a family-friendly, Phillies-themed event in Excursion Park.
The “Phillies Shimmy Down the Shore” extravaganza featured special appearances by the Phanatic, former Phillies Mickey Morandini and Milt Thompson and a watch party of the Phillies game against the Atlanta Braves on the big screen at the Excursion Park Band Shell.
Capitalizing on the overwhelming success of that event, Sea Isle announced Friday that it will hold another watch party in Excursion Park for the Phillies game against the New York Mets on Sept. 20 starting at 6:30 p.m.
It’s being called the “Phillies Phamily Phun Watch Party,” a name dreamed up by Bill Kehner Jr. and other members of Sea Isle’s Recreation Department.
“Since we had such a wonderful turnout during this summer’s Phillies event, our Rec team thought people would enjoy returning to Excursion Park for more
Phillies fun,” city spokeswoman Katherine Custer said.
Although the Phillies “Shimmy Down the Shore” event on Aug. 20 attracted thousands of fans, the Sept. 20 watch party is expected to be a much-smaller affair. The Phanatic and former Phillies players will not make appearances, Custer said.
“This is a little more low-key than the last one. It’s nothing on the same scale,” she said.
The free watch party will start at 6:30 p.m. It will also include complimentary snacks and other giveaways.
The first pitch of the Phillies-Mets game is at 7:10 p.m. but fans are encouraged to arrive early to find a good place to sit. Because seating is limited on the Excursion Park benches, spectators should bring a folding chair or beach blanket to recline on the lawn during the game.
