Parishioners at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sea Isle City are being told to dress warmly for services over the next few weeks because the heating system needs to be repaired.
Father Perry Cherubini, St. Joseph’s pastor, said two rooftop heat inducer fans that keep the church warm no longer work and need to be replaced.
“As some of you may attest, the church was blowing cold air instead of heat on Sunday morning. This situation was one that we could not internally resolve, and we reached out to our HVAC provider on Monday to assess the situation,” Father Cherubini said in a message to parishioners on Thursday.
The HVAC contractor discovered the problem with the heat inducer fans and has ordered the replacement equipment. However, the equipment will not be available until later in December.
“As soon as a definitive date for installation is available, we will share it with you. In the meantime, please dress warmly when coming to church over the next few weeks,” Father Cherubini said, while apologizing for the inconvenience.
The cost to replace the heating equipment is $5,000, but does not include shipping and installation, he said. The installation work will require a crane.
“To help defray this unexpected expense, we will be taking up a second collection this coming weekend,” Father Cherubini said.
