A seasoned HR professional, Drew Soule has built an impressive career navigating the corporate HR landscape. With a master's degree in Human Resource Management from the University of Illinois, Drew has honed his skills at companies like Northrop Grumman and Pinterest, demonstrating a deep commitment to talent management, employee relations, and organizational development. Outside of work, Drew is a passionate advocate for disability rights and enjoys traveling, cooking, and attending music festivals. In this exclusive interview, Drew shares insights into his career, personal values, and experiences shaping his professional journey. Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in your chosen field? My foray into HR found me rather than me seeing it. Living with a disability my whole life, I always relied on others for daily care. Moving away to the University of Illinois, I left behind my parents and faced a situation I knew nothing about. I had to figure out how to hire and retain caregivers, creating an inclusive environment where everyone’s voice was heard. I then worked with the Department of Human Services, recruiting and training paraprofessionals, which sparked my passion for developing others and building high-performing teams. This led me to graduate school and an internship with Northrop Grumman, launching my career in corporate HR. Can you share a defining moment that shaped your career? A defining moment was revamping the performance management process at Pinterest. I discovered we needed help with performance management across engineering teams. There needed to be a consistent process or policy, leading to low, non-regrettable attrition. After getting leadership buy-in, I worked with cross-functional teams to create a simplified process, trained leaders and showed improvement through metrics like employee pulse surveys. This success marked my first significant contribution to a large organization, contrasting with my experiences at Northrop Grumman, which needed to be more open to agile change. How would you describe your personal and professional values? I strive for alignment between my personal and professional values. I have a strong drive to succeed, always aiming for excellence and continuous improvement. Integrity and empathy are fundamental, guiding my actions with honesty and ethical conduct. I believe in building trust through transparency and understanding others' experiences. Resilience is critical, allowing me to bounce back from challenges, adapt to change, and maintain a positive mindset. These values shape my character and guide my actions in all aspects of life. What advice would you give your younger self? I emphasize giving oneself grace, finding balance, and achieving peace. It’s essential to allow time for self-reflection and relaxation. Embrace self-compassion and understand that failures and challenges are opportunities for learning and growing. Prioritize balance between work and personal life, ensuring time for relationships, hobbies, and self-care. Seek activities that bring joy and tranquility, like cooking and attending live music performances. Unplug from work during weekends or vacations to fully immerse in the present moment. What personal or professional achievements are you most proud of? I take great pride in living independently despite being born with a neuromuscular disease. Hiring exceptional caregivers has allowed me to maintain independence and challenge societal assumptions about my capabilities. Professionally, I’ve pushed myself out of my comfort zone, leveraging problem-solving skills and fostering strong relationships. As a change agent, I’ve tackled challenging problems, improving organizational processes and policies. Training and coaching others to sustain these changes brings immense satisfaction.
How do you manage stress and maintain a healthy work-life balance to ensure well-being? I balance routine and spontaneity. I follow a consistent routine during the workweek to minimize decision-making and create stability. This includes setting consistent bedtimes, meditating, and organizing a to-do list. I prioritize nutritious meals preparing food to fuel my body and mind. Outside work, I set clear boundaries and unplug during time off. Engaging in hiking, attending concerts, and exploring local spots brings joy and rejuvenation, helping me recharge and maintain my overall well-being. How do you define success? Success is a continuous journey of learning and personal growth. It involves pushing myself beyond previous achievements and striving for greater heights. Professionally, it may mean securing a promotion or leading a significant project. It includes smaller goals like maintaining a consistent bedtime. Success is built on consistency, creating habits and routines for growth and progress. It’s not just about external recognition but finding internal satisfaction and fulfillment by aligning actions with values and purpose. Who is the one entrepreneur or business leader you consider your greatest example and inspiration? Stevie Hopkins, the late co-founder of 3E Love LLC, inspires me the most. Born with a neuromuscular disease, Stevie used his experiences to promote love, acceptance, and empowerment for people with disabilities. He co-founded 3E Love to spread this message, challenging societal norms and breaking barriers. His work fostered a sense of belonging and raised awareness. Stevie’s enthusiasm and passion for life were infectious, and his ability to create a movement on a global scale is a testament to his visionary leadership. Are there any charitable organizations or community service-oriented activities that you are involved in? I am involved with "Ten Fifty Entertainment," a charitable organization dedicated to accessibility and inclusivity within the festival community across America. They work to ensure all individuals, regardless of physical abilities, can enjoy festivals. Their efforts include ensuring there are adequate accessible parking, viewing areas, restroom facilities, and trained staff on-site at many major music events. Volunteering with them is an opportunity to contribute to a cause that makes a real difference, and I have personally benefited from their services, which have transformed my festival and life experiences. Please tell us an inspirational, uplifting story about a time you helped change someone’s life or someone helped change your life and made a difference. The profound impact my caregivers have had on my life is a story that continues to evolve, and I want to highlight it. These incredible individuals are the unsung heroes who have changed my life and continue making a difference daily. My caregivers are the backbone of my ability to live independently and experience the world. They work tirelessly to ensure I have the support and assistance to navigate life's challenges and embrace opportunities. Without their dedication and selflessness, I wouldn't live a life filled with love, independence, and unforgettable experiences. These remarkable individuals have become an extension of my family, witnessing my highs and supporting me through my lows. They lift me when I feel defeated, providing comfort and strength. Their unwavering commitment and genuine care have transformed my daily life and shaped who I am today. The relationships I have built with my caregivers are some of the most cherished connections I have ever known. Their impact on my life is immeasurable. I am forever grateful for their presence and the profound difference they make.
