What factors do really impact the cost of food?

The food industry is a huge sector that is constantly dealing with many changes, which is why prices can increase quickly. A lot of factors can impact food prices, such as disease outbreaks, supply and demand, natural disasters, and bad weather. Only one of these factors can drive prices upwards, but when there are even more, you will need to pay more for the same products that were a lot cheaper some years ago. As we are currently dealing with wars, climate change, and other challenges, we have the reasons in front of our eyes why prices have increased so much in recent times.

Here are the most common factors that impact the cost of food.

Supply and demand

Supply and demand will always impact prices, and this is also happening in the food industry. So,  transformations in supply and demand could occur because of changes in economic conditions, dietary preferences, or the growth of a country's population. These will always be factors that could push the prices upwards because when demand is bigger than supply, the prices will always rise. On the other hand, when the supply is more prominent than the demand, the prices could decrease.

Technological advancements or weather conditions influence supply and demand, creating volatility. For example, in a bad scenario, natural disasters, like floods or droughts, could reduce supply because they can devastate crops. On the other hand, in favorable weather conditions, the harvest could be abundant, and in this case, the prices could lower because the food supply would rise. Cocoa was one product whose price has increased a lot in the last few years because of crop diseases and poor climate. This has grown the price of products containing cocoa ingredients, and chocolate producers and customers were the most affected.

Agricultural practices

Agricultural practices could also impact the final price of food. For instance, prices will always be higher for companies that use organic farming because they consider sustainable alternatives to synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, which can come with higher costs. When this happens, food companies will need to increase prices to sustain their businesses and avoid losses.

Besides opting for alternatives that will not harm the environment, food companies could also increase the prices if they are using new technology that improves productivity and efficiency. Additionally, other expenses related to infrastructure, labor, and machinery could also increase overall production costs, and in the end, companies will need to raise prices. Innovations in modern farming equipment could help businesses in the food industry become more efficient, but they will also boost the cost of production, which in the end will make customers need to buy more expensive products.

Transportation and logistics

The food prices will also increase because of transportation costs, which can differ in each situation. For example, the distance between farms and markets will impact the cost of food products. This happens because they need to add driver wages, fuel prices, and vehicle maintenance, increasing overall transportation costs. This is why, besides offering the best products to consumers, a nuts manufacturer will also need to find great transportation options so that their goods will arrive safely to people worldwide.

Logistics can also impact the prices, as efficient operations and infrastructure could ultimately affect the cost of food products. This depends from country to country, as those with good infrastructure in railways, highways, and ports could reduce transportation costs because they encourage smoother transportation operations. But, if there are challenges in the supply chain, this will most likely lead to delays, which will also increase costs, and consumers will need to pay more for the same products.

Oil prices

Oil prices can also increase the prices of food, and usually when the price increases by 1%, the food sector will also experience a rise of 0.2%. This happens because when oil prices are higher, companies will need to pay more to transport the food to consumers, whether we are talking about transportation via boat, train, plane, or truck. Higher fuel prices will impact transportation, and as mentioned above, this will also affect food prices.

Fossil fuels are also used to power farmers’ machinery, and if the oil prices are higher, the price of food will also increase. Food prices will also rise when food companies need more energy to keep up with production operations.

Wars

Wars can also drive prices upward, as seen in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This particular war is one reason why food prices have increased so much in the past year. Ukraine is home to very fertile soil, so it can produce high amounts of barley, wheat, soybeans, and corn. Besides this, Ukraine is also a top food producer of sunflower oil, but Russia’s invasion has posed challenges to all of these.

Because of the current war, Russia can jeopardize Ukraine’s agricultural land, making it hard for this country to continue producing food in the same amount as it did prior to the war. This has already happened, which is why the prices have increased so much.

The bottom line

As you can see, many factors will directly impact the prices of food worldwide. Unfortunately, increased food prices will also change consumer behaviors, and individuals will need to take a look at their consumption and shopping habits, and embrace some alternatives to save money like seeking cheaper products, always looking for promotions and discounts, and reducing portion sizes.

Another way customers worldwide can reduce the impact that higher food prices have on them is by growing their own vegetables and fruits. Although food prices are something that no one will want to experience, there is also an advantage in this situation, as this challenge has made people become more conscious of food waste, and people are also trying to be more mindful of this.
