The Garden Club's annual Green Auction brings out the silly side of people for a good cause.

How about a bouquet of Brussel sprouts? Or green cabbage decorated with shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day?
These are some of the delightful, whimsical items that have been auctioned by the Sea Isle City Garden Club in the past, and they may pop up again at the club’s Green Auction on Thursday, at 7 p.m. inside the Community Lodge.
“That photo indicates the type of fun they have at the Green Auction,” Sea Isle City Public Information Officer Katherine Custer noted of the picture at the top of this story of Joanne Gallagher holding the Brussel sprouts bouquet.
“The secret gifts that are bid on can range from silk shamrock scarves to creatively arranged green veggies – all of which make for a very charming event," Custer added.
During the Green Auction, participants can place bids on a variety of wrapped mystery items that are either St. Patrick’s Day-themed or green in appearance.
The Garden Club's annual Green Auction brings out the silly side of people for a good cause.
While the event is meant to be lighthearted fun, some of the proceeds go toward the club’s charitable efforts such as Holy Redeemer Food Pantry in Swainton to help those in need. Funds raised also go to local high schools and some money goes toward purchasing flowers for the club’s spring flower sale.
Garden Club President Marie Tighe said the event is wonderful each year.
“You raise your hand and say, 50 cents and someone else says $1 and it can go up to $5 or $6 or $7,” Tighe said of the bidding. “One time I bid on a box and for $5 I got a green, very tiny colander.”
Tighe said that Donna Hadfield is in charge of the Green Auction and does an amazing job organizing everything down to the decorations in the Community Lodge.
“She does so much,” Tighe said. “She really has the best ideas. She decorates. She brings the food and drinks. She is just an amazing girl.”
“I want people to come and have a good time. Some are 90. I don't expect them to do a lot. Just have a good time,” she added.
