Mayor's Message: June 16

  • News
I begin this message with a word of thanks to all of the people who attended Saturday’s Street Dedication Ceremony in honor of Navy SEAL David M. Tapper, who lost his life in 2003 while serving in Afghanistan. Special thanks goes to the members of the Gold Star Tapper Family – in particular David’s mother, Judi – as well as the members of VFW Post 1963 and Rolling Thunder Chapter 4 of New Jersey, who were also in attendance. Special thanks also goes to Veterans Advocate Joe Griffies, who played a huge part in the renaming of 89th Street. As I said on Saturday morning, since we cannot have David with us to thank him for his service in person, we wanted to make certain that his name is synonymous with 89th Street and Landis Avenue, which is steps away from the vacation home where he spent the summers of his youth. Following a two-year hiatus because of the pandemic, Sea Isle City’s Division of Tourism will host the popular Skimmer Festival on Saturday and Sunday this weekend. Skimmer Festival will feature many enjoyable events and attractions, including a Seaside Vendors Market, Food Court, and free amusement rides and other children’s activities on Saturday – as well as an Antique Auto Show and Parade on Sunday (Father’s Day). Knowing this, I hope everyone is planning on spending this entire weekend in Sea Isle City, because the weather forecast looks fantastic and we have lots of fun waiting for you. Speaking of fun things to do, Sea Isle’s Weekly Summer Events will soon get underway, including our City-sponsored Family Fun Nights on Mondays, Family Movies Under the Stars on Wednesdays, and Concerts Under the Stars on Saturdays. You also won’t want to miss the Chamber of Commerce’s weekly Farmer’s Markets on Tuesday mornings, and your teenagers will love the Chamber’s Acoustic Open Mic Nights on Thursdays – both of which take place at Excursion Park. Last, but certainly not least, our beloved Beachcomber Guides will host their free beach tours at 10 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday mornings – much to the delight of families who love the beach and our local ecosystem. For more information about all of these wonderful attractions, go to
www.VISITSICNJ.com and click the “Weekly Events” link at the bottom of the homepage. My heartfelt congratulations goes to all of the graduates who call Sea Isle City “home” or “home away from home” – and that includes everyone who has accomplished the  academic requirements to advance in their studies, be it kindergarten, grammar school, middle school, high school or college. Locally, we have many “standout” students who attend numerous schools in our region, and we are very proud of them all. Congratulations, graduates! I have two “Shout Outs” this week. The first goes to Michael Thompson, a longtime resident of Sea Isle City who told me that he enjoys reading our E-Newsletter. Thank you, Michael. The second “Shout Out” goes to Tom Corcoran, a U.S. Army veteran who spent two years serving in Vietnam. Mr. Corcoran is a homeowner on 47th Street who graciously contacted us to say how much he appreciates all of the good things that are happening in Sea Isle City – and we are very grateful for his thoughtful comments. Happy Father’s Day to all Dads! Smile … You’re in Sea Isle, Mayor Leonard C. Desiderio
