Sea Isle to Honor Police Officer Who Died in Line of Duty

  • News
The Sea Isle City Police Department will host a memorial ceremony on Friday, Aug. 26, in honor of Patrolman Michael “Mickey” Cullinane, who lost his life in the line of duty 30 years ago. Cullinane died on Aug. 26, 1992, while attempting to rescue a worker from a construction pit at 26th Street and Landis Avenue. He was overcome by toxic gases in the pit and died a short time later. Today, Cullinane’s badge number (#14) is etched on the official badges worn by all members of the SICPD. The lobby of Sea Isle’s City Hall is dedicated in his memory. The memorial ceremony Friday will begin at 10 a.m. on the very site where Cullinane lost his life. The site at 26th Street and Landis is now home to Sea Isle City’s Police Memorial Park, which was created by Eagle Scout Ben Jargowsky in 2016. In addition to past and current members of the SICPD, many others are expected to be in attendance at the 30th anniversary ceremony, including representatives of the Cullinane family, local religious leaders, elected officials and other members of the community. The ceremony will include the placement of a wreath next to a memorial stone bearing Cullinane’s name. Additionally, Mayor Leonard Desiderio and Police Capt. Anthony Garreffi will both speak about Cullinane’s heroism. Afterwards, members of the audience who knew Cullinane will be invited to step to the microphone and share their thoughts and memories. For additional information about the ceremony, call the SICPD at 609-263-4311.
