For the past several years, the city has struggled to establish street trees that will thrive along JFK Boulevard.
Apparently, the wide open east-west corridor makes it especially difficult for many species of street trees to survive in this environment. We’ve had several landscaping professionals review this issue; and after the most recent failure of these trees, we’ve decided to try something a little different.
In recognition of the reopening of businesses and a return to normalcy, and with a wish to make our city’s entrance as inviting as possible, we are placing palm trees along the JFK corridor. We know these won’t be permanent, and we know we’ll need to do something else when winter comes, but we thought this would be a nice touch; and we think it’ll look great when you come over the bridge.
Also along JFK Boulevard, our new pickleball courts are almost completed by the marina and will be open for play for Memorial Day weekend.
On Council’s agenda today is another new item – a resolution authorizing award of a contract for the sale of coffee and iced coffee on our beaches. Everyone knows we already permit the sale of ice cream and water on the beaches; and we had requests to add iced coffee to the menu, so here it is.
Memorial Day is next Monday and we’ll hold our annual ceremony this year at Veterans Park, at 10 a.m. I look forward to seeing everyone as we honor the memory of those who gave their lives in service to our country.
I’m excited about this summer and I really believe this will be like two summers in one.
Finally, as always – please remember – we’re one Sea Isle City and together we will be stronger than ever.
Sincerely,
Mayor Leonard C. Desiderio
