Mayor's Message: April 25

  • News

On the morning of April 13, more than 160 volunteers took time out of their busy schedules to help remove trash and debris from Sea Isle City’s beaches and dunes during the Environmental Commission’s annual Spring Beach Clean-Up – and they did so under cloudy, rainy skies. Clearly, even the weather couldn’t dampen the spirits of the good folks who volunteered that day, because hundreds of pounds of trash were ultimately removed from our shoreline.

There are many good reasons to volunteer at one of Sea Isle’s Beach Clean-ups, and I am certain that people do so mainly because they value clean beaches and a healthy eco-system. Nonetheless, that hasn’t stopped certain members of our business community from going above and beyond to thank the volunteers who help clean our community’s most precious commodity – our beaches. With that in mind, I would like to acknowledge our friends at Approach Clothing Company for donating event tee-shirts for the volunteers; Spinners Pizza, Ice Cream and Grill for donating free ice cream cones to everyone; and Mike’s Seafood for providing a complimentary luncheon immediately following the Beach Clean-Up. Thank you all for supporting the Beach Clean-Up so generously! On Friday, April 26, the members of Sea Isle City’s Historical Society, Garden Club and Environmental Commission will host their annual Arbor Day Celebration at the Community Lodge. This year’s Arbor Day gathering will be focused on the many new trees that the City just planted as part of this year’s Streetscape Tree Planting Project, during which new Trident Maple trees have been added along JFK Boulevard and Sweetbay Magnolias were planted along Landis Avenue in our downtown business district. I hope you can join us Friday at 12 noon for the Arbor Day Celebration – it promises to be a very nice event. And speaking of events, please mark your calendars now for this year’s Community Day Celebration on May 18 and the Garden Club’s annual Flower Sale on May 18 and 19.
During Community Day, you can speak with elected officials and other City personnel – as well as representatives from local civic groups and service organizations. We will also be distributing awards to community volunteers who positively impact the world around them. At the Flower Sale, Garden Club members will sell a variety of annuals and other flowering plants that will beautify your garden and our community. Proceeds from the Flower Sale benefit the Garden Club’s charitable efforts. As you no doubt are aware, numerous road projects have taken place since September – and, now that those projects are being completed, many of our streets have never looked better. As the warmer weather rapidly approaches, contractors will complete the remaining roadwork so that the summer fun everyone looks forward to each year won’t be interrupted. That being said, I would like to thank everyone for their patience and cooperation as we continue to improve Sea Isle City’s roads – and as we strive to wrap up those efforts prior to Memorial Day Weekend. This week’s “Shout Out” goes to Brian and Jamie Heritage and all the employees at Heritage Surf and Sport for being named the Surf Industry Manufacturer Association’s East Coast Retailer of the Year. As anyone who has ever walked through their front door can tell you, Heritage Surf and Sport is a top-notch retailer that has provided quality merchandise (and surfing advice) to customers for many years – and they have every reason to be proud. Congratulations, Heritage Surf and Sport! Smile … You’re in Sea Isle! Mayor Leonard C. Desiderio
