Recreational Programs for All Ages in Sea Isle

  • News
By Maddy Vitale If you are bored, then you aren’t in Sea Isle or you are there, but you haven’t ventured to any of the recreation activities. Maybe you should. And no excuses. There is something for young and old alike, the artistic, the athlete, the chef-in-the making, and for those who need a little relaxation, beach yoga might do the trick. Sea Isle’s Division of Recreation and the Division of Tourism jampacked the 2018 summer season with an itinerary of fun activities and sports programs that will get you moving. Dealy Field will be the home for Sea Isle's first permanent bocce ball court open to the public. (Photo courtesy Sea Isle City) The anticipated new attractions are the bocce ball court at Dealy Field recreation and sports facility and the completion of the 85th Street and the beach playground. Public Information Officer Katherine Custer said Wednesday that the bocce court are just about completed and will be ready for bocce ball enthusiasts to enjoy this summer. It also will be the first permanent bocce ball court open to the public. And the other major attraction, the improved playground, which is already a favorite family spot in the Townsends Inlet section, is almost ready. The city is nearing completion of $55,000 in improvements to the facility, Custer said. New playground equipment, an upgraded pavilion, new picnic tables and new park benches, are some of the highlights. “It is not completed yet, but it will be ready for the summer,” Custer said, adding the city tries to complete all such projects before the summer season Pickleball courts, installed in 2017 off JFK Boulevard, were well received last year and Custer said she expects many people will continue to enjoy the courts this season.
“We are anticipating it will be our best summer yet in Sea Isle City,” she said. Custer has many reasons for her positive outlook. Skateboarding is one of the popular summer activities at Dealy Field. There is the addition of the newest recreation attractions and the installation of the newly updated playground, coupled with the many recreation programs always offered each summer, which include athletic camps, clinics, playground camp and cooking classes for kids. Custer said there are two additional activities for people to enjoy that didn’t make the print edition of the 2018 Sea Isle City’s Visitors Guide. They are the art camp and tennis clinics. She also explained that many of the recreation activities are run by the city, including the summer basketball league and playground camp. However, others, which include clinics and art camp, are through contracted vendors. Information for all of the activities is available at both the city’s website www.seaislecitynj.us and www.VISITSICNJ.com. People may download applications for the various activities from the web sites. And while there are new activities, old favorites still top people’s list. The city’s recreation program provides tennis and basketball courts, a skate park, hockey rink, volleyball and a span of grassy fields for baseball, soccer and other sports at Dealy Field. Then there are fitness classes galore, some designed specifically for seniors. There is also total body fitness and chair yoga.  “All year we have our regular classes for yoga and fitness. Today was the first day that the yoga class returned to the beach,” she said.  “We always have a lot of people show up for that.” Made of asphalt, the pickleball courts are located on West Jersey Avenue, next to Sea Isle's playground complex and basketball courts along John F. Kennedy Boulevard.
