Earlier this year, the State Association of Chief's of Police (N.J.S.A.C.O.P.) Accreditation Manager Harry Delgado personally presented Sheriff Gary Schaffer and Under Sheriff Bob Nolan with the award of Re-accreditation and explained that Cape May County Sheriff's Office is considered in the top 8% of Law Enforcement Agencies in NJ. Freeholder and Mayor of Sea Isle City, Len Desiderio congratulated them for their excellent work.
Cape May County Undersheriff Robert A. Nolan received an enthusiastic and powerful endorsement this week from the current Sheriff, Gary G. Schaffer.
Schaffer, a longtime Ocean City and Upper Township resident, served on the OCPD for more than 25 years. He served as a Detective Lieutenant, commanding the Detective Division, Juvenile Division, SWAT Team Commander, media spokesperson, lead of Internal Affairs investigator, undercover narcotics investigator, among other roles. He retired and then became the Cape May County Police Academy Director and ultimately was elected Sheriff.
“I have spent 45 years in law enforcement and I have worked with a lot of law enforcement professionals during my career,” said Schaffer, who is wrapping up his third elected term as Sheriff. We put together a management team that is second to none and Bob Nolan is part of that team. Bob Nolan as my Undersheriff for the last 7 years has oversight and supervises ever part of the Sheriff Office. Once Bob is elected, will be the first Cape May County Sheriff who worked his way up through the ranks.
Nolan, of Lower Township, has worked in almost every conceivable aspect of the Sheriff’s office. He has been a corrections officer, sheriff officer, with assignments as a court officer, a transportation officer, a warrant officer and lead K-9 officer. "Bob Nolan has been a corporal, sergeant, lieutenant, captain and chief within the department, and now my Undersheriff," Schaffer said.

“Additionally, I was elected Deputy Mayor (in Lower Twp) so I know budgets,” Nolan said. “I learned a lot under Sheriff Schaffer and I picked up a lot of knowledge as Deputy Mayor. My goal for the County of Cape May is to continue to provide high quality law enforcement services and to provide them as reasonably as possible," Bob continued.
"All this is why I say Undersheriff Bob Nolan is uniquely qualified to be the next Cape May County Sheriff," said Schaffer.
“I really can’t go wrong because of the excellent management team we already have in place in our organization,” Nolan said. “I hope to keep as many of these people on as possible because they are doing a fantastic job.”
Nolan added that the Sheriff Office has been under budget for the last 9 years, saving the taxpayers money, while still providing quality law enforcement service. All the while, the department has launched many innovations including the nation’s first internet visitation program for jail inmates, body cameras years before they became popular and a 411 anonymous tips line enabling two way conversations to encourage citizens to assist in solving cases and proving tips.
“I intend to responsibly steward tax dollars and keep the take the Sheriff's Office to the next level,” the Undersheriff Nolan noted.
“There are 4 components to the Sheriff Office and Bob Nolan knows every aspect of the department; the law enforcement division, the correctional division, the civil division and our animal shelter. His opponent has only work in one quarter of the Sheriff Office, the jail and has been out of the Sheriff Office for over 7 years. Bob Nolan will not need on the job training. He will be able to hit the ground running when elected sheriff,” Schaffer said.
The election takes place on Tuesday, November 7. Vote Column One, Republican Bob Nolan for Cape May County Sheriff.
