Summer is officially here and the heat is in full blast. With all these recent overcast days, the sun is more than welcomed, but there are times when the heat can be unbearable. Our AC units are running all day and night, causing electric bills to skyrocket, and chances are we’re not even getting the most out of the cold air. Broadley’s wants to help by offering a few other suggestions for keeping your house cool, that require minimal work at little or no cost.
Close Curtains and Blinds
Did you realize how much heat was coming in through your windows? You can lower the temperature of a room by almost 20 degrees from keeping your blinds closed.
Set Ceiling Fans to Spin Counter-Clockwise
Ceiling fans should actually be adjusted seasonally. They should spin counter-clockwise during the summer at higher speeds.
Avoid Closing Doors
When you close off rooms, you prevent cool air in other parts of the house from reaching the closed rooms. Keep doors open to keep a constant airflow. Sleeping with the door and windows open is also a good idea since you can capitalize on the night’s cooler air.
Turn On Exhaust Fans
Have exhaust fans in your bathroom or kitchen? Turn them on to help pull hot air out after cooking or showering.
Stay Away from Incandescent Lights
Incandescent bulbs tend to waste around 90% of their energy in the heat they emit. You should consider switching to CFL’s (compact fluorescent lamps). Also, no matter what type of lighting you have, as all lighting gives off some type of heat, try to keep them off when not needed. Take advantage of those long daylight hours!
Unplug Unused Appliances
Your appliances and gadgets give off heat even when not in use. When you are not using them, especially at night, make sure to unplug to reduce heat and save energy.
