Mayor Leonard Desiderio

If you haven’t already heard, I am pleased to inform you that Sea Isle City was recently ranked sixth among all of New Jersey’s beach towns by nj.com.

According to a June 27 article from that publication, two journalists “spent the last two weeks scouting the sand, from Sandy Hook all the way down to Cape May at Exit 0 on the Garden State Parkway,” and along the way they examined each town’s beach qualities, dining and recreation options, and other aspects of life at the Jersey Shore, stating that Sea Isle has “a big, beautiful beach with gorgeous dunes to admire and plenty of soft sand to stretch out on” and “a paved promenade instead of a boardwalk to stroll down … and Fish Alley is loaded with a plethora of tantalizing seafood and Italian food options.”

Obviously, as I have said before, Sea Isle City is number one in all of our hearts here in the “Capital of Cape May” – and I say that with no disrespect to the other fine shore towns in the Garden State.

However, we feel this is the perfect opportunity to “toot our own horns” and to be thankful for all the wonderful qualities that Sea Isle City has to offer, because this is not just a feather in the caps of our municipality and the local businesses, this is great news for everyone who considers Sea Isle City their home or home-away-from-home.

As we all know, this weekend is a “long holiday weekend” thanks to Independence Day falling on a Monday.

Hopefully, that means everyone will be able to spend some extra time here in Sea Isle City as you enjoy this important celebration of our nation’s birthday.

To make this weekend memorable, we have several fun attractions coming your way, including a free concert on Saturday night at Excursion Park, and the return of the Junior Olympics on the morning of July Fourth.

The Junior Olympics are hosted by our friends at the Yacht Club of Sea Isle City, who do a fantastic job organizing a morning of friendly competitions for children at Dealy Field – and I am very grateful for all of their efforts!

On the evening of July Fourth, families can also attend our free “All Americana Family Fun Night” at Excursion Park, which begins at 7:30 p.m.

Then, of course, everyone can enjoy Sea Isle’s annual Independence Day Fireworks Show, which takes place at 9 p.m. near the 50th Street beach.

For more info about all of the City-sponsored events happening over the coming days and nights, check-out the “July Fourth Weekend” section of this newsletter or go to www.VISITSICNJ.com.

Looking further afield, Sea Isle’s Division of Recreation will host their 2nd Annual Steve Libro Men’s Basketball Tournament on Saturday, July 16, starting at 9 a.m.

This event is named in memory of a man who served our community honorably as an elected official and recreation leader for many years.

There’s still time to enter this popular competition, which will take place at the JFK Boulevard Courts – so consider forming a team today.

To register for the Steve Libro Men’s Basketball Tournament, go to Sea Isle’s “Rec-Desk” page seaislerec.recdesk.com, or phone the Recreation Office at 609-263-0050 for more details.

During this time of year, we can’t say enough about beach and water safety – and how important it is to remember that a fun day at the beach can quickly unravel when we don’t follow the rules and regulations put in place by our local Beach Patrol.

With that in mind, please remember to only swim on protected beaches while a lifeguard is on duty, and be sure to notice the colored flags on the lifeguard’s stands, which indicate that day’s surf conditions.

If you ever have questions, please ask your nearest lifeguard for assistance – because they are there to ensure that everyone has a safe day at the beach.

Also, it’s a good idea to continually remind your children that they should go directly to the nearest lifeguard stand and tell the lifeguard they need help in the event that they get lost from their family. For more info about beach safety, please go to www.SICBP.com.

My congratulations go to Councilperson Mary Tighe, who was nominated on Tuesday morning to be City Council President for the coming year.

Mary has been a devoted member of City Council since we had our change in local government in 2007, and she is committed to maintaining the high standards that make Sea Isle City such a wonderful place.

Thank you for all you do, Council President Tighe!

Smile … You’re in Sea Isle,

Mayor Leonard C. Desiderio
