Common Furnace Problems

Fortunately for many, this winter has been quite mild and you may not have had to run your heater as much as expected. However, that does not mean you are guaranteed to avoid issues with your furnace and should have a professional inspect the unit if you are experiencing any of the issues below. If not, you should still plan to have it inspected before the weather warms up for good in the spring.

Pilot Light – If your furnace has started to regularly blow cold air during these winter months, this may be caused by the pilot light being out or ignition problems.

Filter – A dirty or clogged furnace filter can inhibit airflow, causing your home to be less heated than it should be. With a large portion of your energy bill coming from heating your home, you want to be sure you’re getting as much heat as you should. Filters should be changed about every two months.

Airflow – Not only can a dirty filter cause lack of airflow from your furnace, but so can worn out bearings and broken belts. Your thermostat could also be broken if you are experiencing a reduced amount of heat in your home.

Noise – Rattling, squeaking and any other unusual sounds in your furnace should be addressed as soon as possible. These could be signs of a mechanical problem, issues with airflow or a clogged burner.

Normal wear & tear – As your furnace gets older, it is bound to decrease in efficiency, but having it continue to run when broken is not safe. A proper furnace repair is good protocol to follow before repairs get extensive and expensive.

Lack of Maintenance – To ensure your furnace lasts as long as possible, inspections need to be done twice a year. Those times are when you first turn it on and when warm weather comes.
