The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities announced that as of Saturday, Aug. 18, the way people dial their phones in Cape May County will change. Local phone calls in the past could be made by dialing phone numbers within the 609 area code without dialing the area code.

A new overlay is coming to the same region that contains the 609 area code to include the 640 area code. In connection with this overlay, all seven-digit dialed calls in the area code 609 will be eliminated and callers will be required to dial 1 + area code + seven-digit telephone number instead. Beginning September 17, new telephone lines or services in the 609 area may be given numbers from the new 640 area code.

Telephone numbers, including current area codes will not change. All essential three-digit services like 911 will still just require just those three digits to dial. Also, the price of a phone call will not change due to this new area code overlay.
