In collaboration with the Wildwood High School All-Star program and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, Cape Assist has implemented the “Too Good for Drugs and Violence” program at Wildwood High School. Over the course of 2016-2017 school year, Cape Assist educators trained the All-Stars students, comprised of juniors and seniors, so that they could facilitate the program to the 9th grade students. The Cape May County Prosecutor’s office spoke to the All Stars students about the problems of drug abuse and violence, as well as how they could make a positive impact on other students and in their community. The Wildwood High School administration, Principal Schaffer and Peer Leader Adviser Betty Harshaw embraced the program, helping to recruit students and invested their time to make the program work.

“Our goal was, and I think we’ve achieved it, that while teaching younger students, All Stars would feel that they are true agents of change and that they can affect their school community in a positive way”, said Natalia Wilber, Community Educator at Cape Assist. “It was amazing to see the transformation some of the students went through when they were teaching the curriculum to a freshman class”.

The program focuses on life skills such as communication, embracing individual differences, conflict de-escalation, healthy relationships, decision-making, importance of goal setting, and drug education. “We were very impressed with the passion and the energy the youth brought to the program, we couldn’t wait to do it this year” said Joe Faldetta, Prevention Director of Cape Assist.
